Arcade Fire, Neon Bible: Following an intense year of touring after the release of their debut album Funeral, the band wanted to sit down and write songs, so having found a church in a small town and turning it into a studio, they have produced an album of half-assed punk rock mistakes and meticulously orchestrated woodwinds, processed strings and mandolin, quiet rumbles and loud rumbles but mostly songs that they think are really good. $16.00
Arcadia, So Red The Rose: Roger Taylor, Nick Rhodes, Simon Le Bon. Additional personnel: Carlos Alomar, Gabriel Bindi, Pierre DeFay, Jean-Claude Dubois, Mark Egan, David Gilmour, Herbie Hancock, Grace Jones, Steve Jordan, Rafael DeJesus, Andy MacKay, Sting, Masami Tsuchiya, David Van Tieghem. After the release of their third album, 1983s Seven And The Ragged Tiger, and a lengthy tour, Duran Duran split into two camps for about 18 months. Andy and John Taylor formed the chart bound Power Station with Robert Palmer and Chic drummer Tony Thompson, while singer Simon LeBon and keyboardist Nick Rhodes formed the artier Arcadia. So Red The Rose is a bit more experimental than the Durannies' hit albums, but LeBon and Rhodes' songs (although Duran Duran drummer Roger Taylor plays on the album, he didn't participate in the writing) are fundamentally similar to their Duran Duran work. The single Election Day and the ballad Goodbye Is Forever in particular wouldn't sound out of place on any Duran Duran album. The lengthier tracks on side two, featuring cameos by artists like Herbie Hancock and art-pop percussionist David Van Tieghem, are somewhat more intriguing. $12.00

This is no better captured than in the freewheeling 'Why Not Nothing' and the mournful 'Cry Til The Morning'. Richard's ability to build up feeling and emotion in songs is second to none. He does it with his usual craft on this reflective offering and also finds time to fires out a more positive than normal perspective with pride and, dare say it; contentment, via Keys To The World. Includes a bonus DVD. $27.00

Bauhaus, Go Away White: Recorded in 18 days at Zircon Skye in Ojai, with singer Peter Murphy, bassist Daniel J, guitarist Daniel Ash and drummer Kevin Haskins playing together as a band in one room, taking first takes as final cuts. So, a new record but apparently a final one, the band having decided to release it as a posthumous swan song. Go Away White is everything you would hope Bauhaus would deliver as their final statement. Fronted by a cover photo of Bethesda, the angel of the healing waters in New York's Central Park, the music inside is pure-cathartic renovation, a psychedelic glimpse into an enchanted moment. Aided in part by guitarist Daniel Ash's inspired use of Jimi Hendirx's own personal Vox wah wah pedal, gifted to him by Peter Murphy at the stat of the sessions, it is pop as much as it is experimental. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Baby 81: The fourth album from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, is an ambitious, powerful, guitar-driven rock'n'roll record that's guaranteed to get people jumping and thinking. There's plenty on Baby 81 to get inspired by: the chunky riff that launches opener 'Took Out a Loan', the massive, Led Zeppelin-style beat propelling '666 Conducer', the woozy, piano-led 'Window', or the gorgeous symphonic drone of 'All You Do Is Talk'. But most surprisingly is how the album somehow ties in all 3 of their previous efforts, while still managing to take a leap forward. Baby 81 ultimately captures Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at the most crucial time of their career. $15.00
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Howl: BRMC are Peter Hayes, Robert Turner and Nick Jago. For a while there, drummer Nick Jago's future in the band was in jeopardy, but now everyone has made up and have joined forces to make a triumphant return with a new single, album and UK dates. This, their third album, is the first album for the Echo Label following their departure from Virgin Records. BRMC's hellish past two years have been well documented. Their label pulled support for the band's sophomore album. Fingers were pointed, ties with management were severed, legal wrangling ensued. BRMC subsequently found itself without a record label and sat on the sidelines while other members of the class of 2000 like the Strokes and White Stripes plowed full steam ahead. Those who expect a scabrous indictment of the music industry will no doubt be surprised by the rather subdued direction of the band's new material. Rather than rev up the guitars and stoke the flames, the band has instead cut a mostly acoustic album, one that skirts their muscular update of shoegaze in favor of warm, primitive blues. Howl also happens to be the first album that overtly ties the band to their hometown of San Francisco--as the Allen Ginsberg-influenced title suggests. Turner has said that Howl is intended as a tribute to the city's Beat generation. $14.00

David Bowie, Platinum Collection (US)(3 CDs): This compilation features the cream of the material the star recorded between 1969 and 1987. David Bowie remains impossible to pigeonhole - first there was Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and a Thin White Duke. Nick Cave has also composed the film's soundtrack in conjunction with Warren Ellis, his longtime Bad Seeds collaborator and multi-instrumentalist frontman of The Dirty Three. With this release we have something that few could have expected - two albums that can both be regarded as self-contained masterpieces; two storming, driving, relentless, devotional, slinky, subtle, heartbreakingly-beautiful records that, lyrically, switch from the cynical to the sanguine, the defeated to the defiant, dealing in love, war, beauty, children, romance, rejection, Pethedine, poetry, God, Auden, Johnny Cash, cold potatoes, too-much-money, not enough money, writer's block, flowers, animals and more flowers. But maybe we're projecting here. $22.00
The Charlatans, You Cross My Path (Special Edition): Recorded in Los Angeles, Ireland and the band's own Big Mushroom studio, and was produced by the band along with longtime collaborator James Spencer and mixed by Alan Moulder. The Charlatans, Simpatico: Two seconds into Blackened Blue Eyes, when Mark Collins' guitar punctuates the super groove of Tony Roger's piano, one thing is clear, The Charlatans UK is a vital force. Then Tim Burgess' vocals come in, with a melody that's so beguiling it almost disguises the disturbing intensity at the heart of the song. It's great to have the band back with a record, Simpatico, that finds them better and fresher than ever, and ready to take on the world again. Simply put, it's a record that sees every member of The Charlatans U.K step up to the plate and give it everything. $17.00
The Charlatans, Some Friendly: The Charlatans formed in the late 80s in a remote Northern England town, one of hundreds of groups profoundly influenced by that chart-topping indie-rock band from neighboring Manchester, the Stone Roses. Some Friendly, the Charlatans' 1990 debut, is certainly brimming with Roses references. Almost all of the album's 11 songs feature the shuffling Manchester drum beat popularized by the Roses, and Charlatans singer Tim Burgess' laid-back, confident voice sounds quite similar to that of the Roses' Ian Brown. Unlike most Roses-inspired bands, the Charlatans were willing and able to take their music beyond the narrow confines of the Manchester sound. Their most distinctive element was Rob Collins' surging Hammond organ. Although the catchy keyboard hook on the single The Only One I Know was lifted from Deep Purple's 1968 hit Hush, the Charlatans' swirling, psychedelic sound gave the classic English rock sound of the '60s a distinctly modern twist. Several other songs - notably the majestic Sproston Green and Polar Bear, capture a similarly dreamy pop mood. This promising debut provided a foundation from which the Charlatans worked themselves into one of England's top rock bands. $14.00
The Charlatans, Up At The Lake (Japan): Japanese pressing of the British alternative act's 2004 album, scheduled to include bonus material. Details TBA. $40.00
The Charlatans, Up At The Lake: The Charlatans eighth album, is another stone-cold classic. Produced by The Charlies themselves, it feels like there strongest set of songs to-date. Having dabbled in LA-infused funk for 'Wonderland' and Gram Parsons-esque country-soul on Tim Burgess' solo outing, 'Up At The Lake' returns the baggy survivors to the traditional indie-shuffles and Stonesian-majesty of earlier releases, relinquishing Tim's falsetto and piling on the anthems. The Charlatans have succeeded, again, in remaining relevant, innovative and totally essential. 11 tracks. $23.00
The Charlatans, Between The 10th And The11th: Combining the retro-psychedelia of the Stone Roses with a large dose of The Doors' swirling keyboard-based sensibility, the Charlatans UK had an initially swift and painless rise to fame. Rocky times lay ahead however, including the mental illness of their bass player and the departure of their guitarist. Compounding these setbacks was the commercial disappointment of the otherwise outstanding Between The 10th And The11th. Despite its lack of contemporary commercial success, this album contains the beginnings of a musical maturity and depth. More guitar-based than usual, Between The 10th And The11th embraces a loose, jamming tradition not usually found in post '70s British pop, shown to greatest effect on The End of Everything. The album has a harder edge than previous efforts, as if the band were trying to stay one step ahead of their demons. Unfortunately they'd soon suffer more setbacks when integral member and keyboard player Rob Collins would be arrested for armed robbery; a few years later he was killed driving drunk from a pub to the studio. The Charlatans rock harder on this collection without losing any of the psychobabble weirdness that was so invigorating on SOME FRIENDLY...this is a great pop band with an arsenal of great songs. $14.00
The Charlatans, Up To Hips: Having experienced initial fame and its retreat, the Charlatans (perhaps somewhat self-consciously) set out to create a series of classic rock inspired albums, fusing everything from Dylan and the Stones to whatever else caught their fancy. Up to Our Hips, the first result, was produced by Steve Hillage, who made a career ranging from wacked-out hippie ramblings in Gong to the clean, inspired synth/Krautrock surge suffusing his production for Simple Minds. One thing he contributed to the Charlatans was more active percussion. While Flood didn't hide the drums on Between, on Come In Number 21 Brookes' work feels strong and punchy for the first time. While production was a touch more straightforward than on Between, Hillage otherwise let the Charlatans be the Charlatans; where changes are apparent, it's more in the name of atmosphere than attention getting, especially on the echoed, rumbling funk instrumental Feel Flows (excellent Blunt bass and Rob Collins clavinet on this one). The band stretches with the lovely, acoustic stomp Autograph; Mark Collins' guitar work was, increasingly, a larger part of the band's sound than Rob Collins' Hammond, but both worked well together. The laid-back lead single Can't Get Out of Bed's lazy Exile on Main Street vibe and the equally groovy Patrol and Jesus Hairdo showcased both of their work to good effect, especially on the breaks between chorus and verse. Rob Collins certainly still has his moments, witness the opening build to the title track, another great effort with Blunt. Burgess sounds his strongest yet, while his singing still lurks in the mix more than anything else, he never disappears entirely. $14.00
The Charlatans, The Charlatans: Charlatans demonstrated signs of a revival on Up to Our Hips, yet that record in no way suggested the full fledged return to form of The Charlatans, the group's most ambitious, focused and successful album. The group hasn't changed its sonic approach, yet their music has deepened, incorporating heavy dance elements without losing their core sound. Occasionally, the album relies too heavily on trippy dance instrumentals, but those are funkier and wilder than ever before, and they fit neatly next to the group's Stonesy pop, which is consistently catchy this time around. The Charlatans illustrates how a working rock and roll band can balance between traditional rock and modern, post-acid house music, and the results are frequently glorious. $14.00
Chemical Brothers, We Are The Night: 12-track CD album. We Are The Night is 12 tracks of psychedelic warehouse party acid music, euphorically melodic and as uncompromising as their retina scorching live shows, including the single Do It Again, it features guest vocals appearances from The Klaxons, Ali Love, Fatlip, Willy Mason and Midlake. $17.00
The Chemical Brothers, Push The Button: The Chemical Brothers are back with their fifth studio album. Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons once again demonstrate that, when it comes to beat-based innovation, inspired collaboration and sheer sonic excellence, they are matchless. The first single 'Galvanize' is a Middle Eastern flavored juggernaut, featuring A Tribe Called Quest legend Q-Tip. Old sparring partner Tim Burgess continues a run of sublime hook-ups with 'The Boxer'. Also representing the hip hop world that was Tom and Ed's first love is Anwar Superstar, brother of Mos Def and here vocalist of 'Left Right'. $17.00

Chris Cornell, Carry On: 2007 US CD album. Chris's 2nd solo album produced by Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones, Morrissey) is a sonic soundscape of heavyweight proportions, from delicate acoustics to bristling electric guitars, it's a masterclass in rock and immaculately captures Chris' exceptional voice, which was once described as rock's most elastic instrument, including the glorious single Arms Around Your Love, the smash hit Bond theme You Know My Name. $14.00
Ferry Corsten, L.E.F: Ferry Corsten's second album under his own name and the sound of an innovative artist at the top of his game. Corsten's sound is his own, developed beyond generic club tracks into startling electronic missives that have frequently taken hold of the mainstream and shaken it up. Featuring collaborations with Howard Jones and Guru (Gangstarr/Jazzmattaz) plus a faithful reworking of 808 State's 'Cubik' ('Cubikated'), this album sees him edge further leftfield, showing he's not afraid to delve into the darker reaches of the man/machine symbiosis. Whereas the single, 'Fire', with Simon Le Bon on vocals, attest to this ability to write tracks that rock dancefloors, the airwaves, and the charts, in equal measure. $20.00
Cousteau, Nova Scotia: Cousteau have had to overcome inherent difficulties since the release of two glorious, critically acclaimed albums ('Cousteau' in 2000 and 'Sirena' in 2002). Towards the end of an American tour, the band found out that their songwriter and creative lynchpin Davey Ray Moore was leaving to do his own thing. Vocalist Liam McKahey recalls a gloomy gathering with guitarist Robin Brown, drummer Craig Vear and bassist Joe Peet in a Boston airport bar, 'We thought it was the end and we were all feeling really emotional. But after a few pints, we'd decided to carry on and do the song writing ourselves. It was sink or swim, and we decided to swim.' While 'Nova Scotia' is undoubtedly a Cousteau record, possessing McKahey's trademark Scott Walker-esque baritone and Robin Brown's distinctive atmospheric lines, it does perhaps signal a subtle shift away from a Bacharach-ian pop sensibility to a rawer, more rock-borne sound. $23.00

The Creatures, Hai! (2CDs): Siouxsie and Budgie return as The Creatures with their emphatically titled 2003 album 'Hai!'. Translated, the title of this self-produced, Anglo-Japanese fusion means 'Yes!' and is released on their own Sioux Records label. As mysterious as the serene yet sensual beauty of the cover image by Japanese artist Kimiko Yoshida, 'Hai!' is an alchemy of distilled atmospherics and sublime minimalism. Yet as Siouxsie's vocals soar over Budgie's daredevil drums and marimbas, syncro-meshed to the pulsing Taiko rhythms of ex-Kodo drummer Leonard Eto, 'Hai!' soon splits several sonic skins to emit a roar that would rival that of Japan's most famous movie monster, 'Godzilla!', whose paean from Siouxsie is released as the album's first single. The second disc features instrumental versions of all nine tracks. $17.00
