Band Aid, Do They Know It's Christmas?: It was, in many ways, the music world's finest hour as many of the biggest names in British popular music gathered in the summer of 1985 for the sake of charity to record a song to raise money for those people starving in Ethiopia. Organized by Bob Geldof, the singer for the British group The Boomtown Rats, the single Do They Know It's Christmas, gave birth to Live Aid, the world's biggest rock concert and TV event which spanned two continents and was the catalyst for similar recording projects in the U.S. and Canada. Blow Monkeys, Animal Magic (NTSC Region 0): The first ever DVD to feature one of the great English pop bands of the 1980's. The Blow Monkeys were led by singer/guitarist Dr. Robert and featured Tony Kiley (drums), Mick Anger (bass) and Neville Henry (saxophone) in the lineup. They struck gold with the UK and US Top 40 hit Digging Your Scene in 1986 and went on to place ten singles and four albums on the UK charts between 1986 and 1990. Dr Robert also recorded a duet with Kim Mazelle, Wait, which was a top 10 hit in the UK in 1989. Animal Magic features a full show the band played in London on the eve of the release of their breakthrough album of the same name. Among the songs featured are covers of classic hits by T. Morrissey, Hulmerist: With the release of You Are The Quarry propelling Morrissey back into the public consciousness, it seems as good a time as any to reassess the man's back catalogue. Hulmerist was originally released on VHS video back in 1990 and has now been remastered and released on DVD (NTSC / Region 0) for the first time. The disc contains seven 'Promotional films' which are intercut with footage filmed at Morrissey's first solo gig at Wolverhampton Civic Hall in 1988. The footage mostly consists of interview snippets with various fans, although it does tend to veer off into the surreal at times - four earnest men in Smiths T-shirts stroking donkeys to the sound of classical music appears at one point. For any fans who need to replace their old VHS copy of Hulmerist this is essential, while anyone new to the Morrissey phenomenon is also bound to find something to attract their interest. A timely reminder that one of England's finest songwriters can also have a pretty good visual sense as well. $32.00

John Taylor (Featured) James Angell, Private Player In Concert: Featuring John Taylor, Daniel Riddle, Tony Lash, Kevin Cozad and Sean Tichenor. On March 14th, 2003 James Angell and his band Private Player were joined by none other than Duran Duran's John Taylor for a performance at Portland, Oregon's Aladdin Theatre. Taylor had heard Angell's CD Private Player a few months earlier through a mutual friend and was so impressed that, upon meeting Angell at a club in New York City, he offered to lend his hand in presenting the songs live. Angell, a longtime Duran Duran fan, was ecstatic with the idea. After a brief series of fast-and-furious rehearsals, the band debuted on January 3rd, 2003 at Portland's Lola's Room. Reception by the sold-out crowd was enthusiastic, and immediately another show was in the works. This DVD is an exhilarating document of the group's second show. The band's chemistry brings new life and energy to the layered pop psychedelia found in Angell's studio work.
